Robert J. McDermott was born in Brooklyn and educated at Loyola School in Manhattan and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. where he received an A.B. degree in 1966.  He received a J.D. (cum laude) in 1970 and an LL.M. (in Taxation) in 1974 from New York University School of Law.

Following law school and until his appointment to the Tax Appeals Tribunal Mr. McDermott practiced law in New York City specializing in taxation, including matters involving business entities, capital markets, individuals, estates and trusts and charitable foundations and exempt organizations.  From 1979 to 1982 he was a member of the Committee on Taxation of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and from 1980 to 1990 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the New York State Bar Association Tax Section.  He is a life fellow of the New York Bar Foundation.  He was also President of the NYU Law Alumni Association from 1989 to 1991.

Mr. McDermott was nominated by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate in 2005 to serve as a Commissioner of the Tax Appeals Tribunal. He resides in New York City and Germantown, New York.
